Choose the most appropriate prayer, and assure people that you don’t have to believe in God to pray to him!
You could also put copies of these at the back of the church for people to pick up, and/or put them on your church website.
- God, I don’t know if you exist or not. But if you do, please do something to help me get to know you. Please help me to recognise your work in my life. Please help me to read the Bible, and reveal yourself to me as I read. Please draw me to know you. Amen.
- God, I was brought up to know you, but I drifted away, and made decisions which meant that I did not follow up in getting to believe in you. I hope that you are as forgiving as you promise to be in the Bible. Please draw me back to yourself, break down the barriers that separate us, and help me to know you, trust you, and love you. I ask this prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.
- God I think that you must disapprove of the kind of life I have led, and the things I have done. So I am not sure that I could ever change myself enough to get to know you. But people say that the Bible promises that anyone can turn to you at any time, and you will accept them, just as they are. So please help me to trust in your promises in the Bible, and in your Son Jesus, who died to save me. Amen.
- There are so many religions and different ideas, god, that I don’t know if you exist, or if you do, how you reveal yourself to humans. But if you do exist, I hope that you will reveal yourself to me, so that I can worship you, and find my meaning in you. So please reach out to me, and do whatever it takes for me to know you.
- God I am desperate, and finding my life unmanageable, if not pointless. I don’t know where else to turn, so I want to turn to you if you exist. Please draw me to you, so that I can know you, and find meaning and purpose for my life. Amen.
- god i can’t find you and don’t know how to find you or where to start. So please find me, and help me to read bits of the Bible which tell me about you. Amen.
You can also write your own prayers to give to people to pray, and perhaps create a specific prayer that would be really appropriate to offer to someone you are talking with!
