Application forms for Preaching Training Workshops and Prayer Training Workshops for 2025

APPLICATION FORM FOR PREACHING TRAINING AND PRAYER TRAINING WORKSHOPS

PREACHING TRAINING WORKSHOPS

‘Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching, and to teaching … Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress’ [1 Tim 4:13,15]. NIV11

These groups are open to men and women who have a theology degree, and who are in full or part-time gospel ministry. Why run these groups?

Our sermons in church are the one time in the week in which we address God’s people with God’s word, so we want to increase the quality of our preaching.

When we preach, we model and encourage people to love and respect God’s words, to understand, interpret, and apply them, so we train them in their own Bible reading and their ministry to others.

However good our college training has been, doing ministry raises questions about how to do ministry, as regular preaching raises questions about how to preach most effectively.

‘Iron sharpens iron’, and it is good to get feedback on our sermons from people who experience and understand the possibilities and challenges of this ministry.

Preparing and preaching sermons bring many issues to the surface: exegesis, hermeneutics, Biblical Theology, theology, pastoral and cultural awareness, the Christian life, leadership, and emotional and relational intelligence, especially in dealing with congregations/churches, not just individuals. We want to encourage life-long flourishing and growth in life and in ministry in gospel workers.

We want to build a supportive camaraderie among gospel workers [beyond natural college connections], for mutual encouragement, discussion, concern, and prayer. Preaching groups [like other training events] provide opportunities for valuable casual conversations.

I hope that these sessions will also further equip you to train other preachers in your church.

Details:

  • Some groups meet in person, and others meet via Zoom. The sessions run for 2 hours, with two people preaching and then getting feedback.
  • You may preach a draft version of a sermon, to get feedback before you preach it; or you may bring a sermon you have already preached, either by playing a recording or by preaching it again.
  • We meet about every 6 weeks. We don’t set the dates for the year, but set the next date at each meeting. The day and time of meeting is set to enable all to take part. Allowing for hols etc, it works out at about 6 meetings a year.
  • The costing arrangement is $40 per person per session, and if you are enrolled in the group, you will be charged for the session even if you are not able to attend.
  • You are free to withdraw from your enrolment at any time by letting me know.
  • You are welcome to come to one session to try it out, with no cost and no obligation.

PRAYER TRAINING WORKSHOPS

‘We will devote ourselves to prayer and the ministry of the word’ [Acts 6:4]. ‘Devote yourselves to prayer’ [Col 4:2].

While Colleges invest a lot in preparing people to preach, there is less training in prayer. These interactive workshops aim at enriching our praying by the Bible, helping leaders increase a culture of prayer in church or ministry, and training leaders to train others in prayer. These groups are open to men and women who have leadership roles in church or other ministries.

This is a 2 year program, to give participants more time and space to implement what they learn. The sessions are interactive, and last for 1 ½ hours. This includes my input, feedback on our progress, discussion, questions, ideas, and prayer.

Over the 2 years the topics include: relational and request prayers; confession of sin; lament and protest; protective prayers; thanksgiving and praise; how to turn the Bible into prayers; the ministry of praying for others and encouraging them to pray; the connection and distinction between personal and ministry prayers, and the need to do both; how to be a prayer leader in your church or ministry; varied useful self-disciplines in prayer.

Application is made one year at a time, for six meetings during the year. Some groups meet in person, and others meet via Zoom. We meet about every 6 weeks. We don’t set the dates for the year, but set the next date at each meeting. The day and time of meeting is set to enable all to take part. It will be 6 meetings a year.

The costing arrangement is $30 per person per session, and if you are enrolled in the group, you will be charged for the session even if you are not able to attend. You are free to withdraw from your enrolment at any time by letting me know. You are welcome to come to one session to try it out, with no cost and no obligation.
