Habakkuk 3.1-19. Mercy with Judgement

In this last chapter, we read of Habakkuk’s response to God. He prays that God would act in mercy as well as judgement ;’in wrath remember mercy’ [3:2]. He prays that as God had delivered his people from Egypt, so he would act again to judge Babylon. And as God will judge both Babylon [3:16], and his own people in the curses of the covenant [3:17 {see Deuteronomy 28:15ff}], yet amidst God’s wrath, Habakkuk still trusts God as Saviour [3:18]. These themes come again in Romans 1-3. Finally, the prophet’s prayers become a song of God’s people [3:19 b].
